NATO to discuss threats to Black Sea shipping following attacks on commercial vessels off Romania and Bulgaria
NATO ambassadors will meet in Brussels next week to discuss growing threats to commercial shipping in the Black Sea. The meeting follows new drone attacks on vessels near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria. The Alliance plans to review the regional security situation and possible measures to protect maritime routes that are strategically important for international trade, including Ukrainian agricultural exports.
Incidents involving commercial vessels in the Black Sea have become more frequent in recent weeks. On October 14–15, the tankers Yara J and Wine Trader were attacked near the Romanian port of Sulina. Similar incidents were previously reported off the Bulgarian coast, where one vessel sank. Authorities in both countries are investigating the incidents, while the origin of the drones has not yet been conclusively established.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that the attacks threaten international trade and critical infrastructure. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the Alliance was ready to continue cooperation with Black Sea countries and strengthen defensive measures if necessary. One of the key concerns remains the safety of shipping near the territorial waters and exclusive economic zones of NATO member states.
The situation is particularly important for Ukrainian agricultural exports. Romania’s port of Sulina and the Sulina Canal provide access to the Danube transport corridor, which is used to ship Ukrainian grains and oilseeds. Amid restrictions on Black Sea port operations, alternative routes via the Danube remain essential for maintaining exports. At the same time, the spread of attacks to areas near Romania and Bulgaria threatens the stability of these shipments.
