Morocco expects 9 mln tons grain harvest in 2026
Morocco expects its 2026 cereal harvest to reach approximately 9 million tonnes, according to Agriculture Minister Ahmed El Bouari. Speaking before the upper house of parliament, he said the crop is projected to include 4.4 million tonnes of soft wheat, 2.1 million tonnes of durum wheat and 2.5 million tonnes of barley.
The minister noted that harvesting activity has accelerated significantly in recent weeks. During the second week of June, daily collection volumes exceeded 10,000 tonnes, reflecting stronger harvesting progress after earlier seasonal delays.
Previously, grain traders and millers had reported difficulties in collecting the crop due to a prolonged rainy season, labor shortages and insufficient harvesting equipment. Despite these challenges, the bulk of production remains concentrated in the country’s key agricultural regions of Casablanca-Settat, Fès-Meknès and Marrakech-Safi.
According to the ministry, increased mechanization has played an important role in speeding up harvest operations and improving crop yields. The wider use of modern agricultural equipment has helped farmers manage the season more efficiently.
Morocco is also continuing efforts to strengthen its food security system. New grain storage facilities with a combined capacity of about 200,000 tonnes have been introduced, while government support for storage infrastructure has been increased from 10% to 25%. Authorities have additionally encouraged operators to build strategic reserves by storing around 80,000 tonnes of locally produced wheat.
