Moldova does not rule out Russian strike on Giurgiulești port
Moldova does not rule out the possibility that Russia could strike the Giurgiulești port following statements by Russian officials alleging that weapons are being supplied to Ukraine through the port. Moldova’s Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea said this in an interview with TVR Moldova.
According to Bolea, Moscow has already made unfounded accusations that the Ukrainian Starokozache border crossing is being used to transport weapons to Ukraine. Russian officials have made similar claims about the Giurgiulești port. On September 8, Russia launched a drone strike on the Starokozache crossing, killing two people and injuring three others.
In early August, Russia’s Foreign Ministry claimed that Romania was allegedly providing Ukraine with “direct military and logistical support”, casting doubt on the future use of the Giurgiulești port. Romania’s Foreign Ministry described the statements as Stalinist propaganda.
Bolea said Russia poses a threat to the entire civilized world and called Moscow’s explanations for its attacks on Ukraine absurd. “The war has come too close to us,” the Moldovan minister said.
There are two ports in Giurgiulești — the privately operated Giurgiulești International Free Port and a state-owned port for cargo and passenger traffic. In 2026, Danube Logistics, the operator of the Giurgiulești International Free Port, was acquired by the Romanian port of Constanța.
