India’s edible oil imports reach a 10-month high
India’s edible oil imports climbed to 1.49 mln tons in July 2026, the highest level in ten months, as refiners rebuilt inventories ahead of the country’s festival season amid tightening domestic supplies, Reuters reported, citing trade estimates.

Palm oil imports posted the strongest growth, rising 50% from June to 733 thsd tons, the highest level in five months. Soyoil imports increased 32% to 501 thsd tons, reaching a seven-month high, while sunflower oil imports edged up 4% to 253 thsd tons.
Overall imports of the three main edible oils rose 34% month on month. According to Sunvin Group CEO Sandeep Bajoria, refiners are replenishing stocks after several months of lower imports in preparation for the festival season, which runs from August through November and typically drives peak edible oil demand.
Market participants expect strong imports to continue over the coming months. GGN Research forecasts that soyoil imports will exceed 500 thsd tons in both August and September due to competitive global prices. Lower domestic crushing of rapeseed and soybeans is also increasing India’s reliance on imported vegetable oils.
The stronger buying is expected to benefit the world’s leading vegetable oil exporters. Increased demand from the world’s largest edible oil importer should help Indonesia and Malaysia reduce palm oil inventories, while supporting higher exports of soyoil from Argentina. The stronger import demand could also provide support to benchmark palm oil and soyoil futures.
