India exceeds government wheat procurement target

Індія

India’s wheat procurement for buffer stocks has surpassed the government’s revised target, according to official data. As of May 31, total purchases reached 34.99 million tonnes, up 17% from 29.82 million tonnes in the same period last year and above the revised target of 34.5 million tonnes.

The original procurement target had been set at 30.3 million tonnes but was later raised in late April following increased demand from individual states. The purchases are carried out by the Food Corporation of India to strengthen national buffer stocks and ensure food security.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agriculture has further raised its estimate for India’s 2025 wheat output to 120.66 million tonnes, despite localized damage from unseasonal rains and hailstorms. The revised forecast is 2.3% higher than last year’s output of 117.94 million tonnes.
