Heatwave may support buckwheat prices in Poland

Polish buckwheat prices have remained stable for the past three weeks, but an intense heatwave is beginning to pose risks to the new crop. The physical market remains balanced, with trading activity staying relatively subdued. Meanwhile, lower-priced Chinese buckwheat has had only a limited impact on the European market amid rising trade tensions between the EU and China.

Temperatures above 30°C, with highs reaching up to 35°C in some regions, are forecast across much of Poland. For buckwheat, which is currently in the flowering and grain-filling stages, prolonged heat can reduce pollination, lower seed set, and ultimately cut yields, particularly on lighter soils with limited moisture reserves.

The market is also being supported by relatively high drying, processing, and logistics costs, while uncertainty surrounding EU–China trade relations continues to discourage European buyers from relying heavily on Chinese-origin supplies.

Analysts expect Polish buckwheat prices to remain stable or edge slightly higher over the next one to two weeks. If the heatwave persists into the first half of August, weather conditions could become the main driver of the new-crop market.
