Global sugar prices rose after analysts revised the 2026/27 global sugar balance forecast from a surplus to a deficit, according to Barchart.

According to Covrig Analytics, the global sugar deficit in the 2026/27 marketing year is expected to reach 300 thsd tons, compared with an earlier forecast for a 100 thsd-ton surplus. Green Pool projects a 3.3 mln-ton deficit, while StoneX forecasts a 1.7 mln-ton deficit.

Sugar prices are also being supported by concerns over a weak monsoon in India and the impact of El Niño, which could reduce crop yields in India, Brazil, and Thailand.

Another supporting factor is lower sugar production in Brazil, where part of the sugarcane crop is being diverted to ethanol production due to high crude oil prices.
