Germany’s meal production is declining
Domestic production of oilseed meal in Germany has recently shown a slight downward trend, according to the German Union for the Promotion of Oilseed and Grain Cultivation (UFOP).
According to the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE), approximately 8.1 million tons of meal were produced in Germany in the 2024/25 season, a decrease of approximately 1.2% compared to the previous marketing year.
Rapeseed meal, which accounts for almost 67% of the total, remains the most important source of protein. Its production reached just under 5.4 million tons, approximately 1.1% below the previous year’s level. Due to the small rapeseed harvest in Germany in 2024, supplies were supplemented by imports from Australia, Ukraine, and Canada.
According to UFOP research, the majority of rapeseed meal produced in Germany is used in the domestic compound feed industry, as well as in cattle feed. Rapeseed meal is the most cost-effective protein source in terms of price and quality, especially if dairy farms produce products labeled “non-GMO.”
