Germany plans to import biomenthane from Ukraine
German Economy Minister Katharina Reiche proposes importing biomethane from Ukraine for heating. This is reported by Spiegel.
The German government wants to increase the use of biogas. This decision was made as part of the reform of the heating law. For homeowners, the requirements are planned to be significantly eased when replacing their heating: the current rule, according to which at least 65% of the energy for heating must come from renewable sources, will be abolished.
To meet the planned quota of “green gas”, heating systems must use more biomethane and synthetic fuel, the minister noted. She proposes importing “green” gas from Ukraine.
According to Reiche, Ukraine offers biogas in large quantities. Currently, there are certain regulatory difficulties on the part of Ukraine and the EU. “But when these problems are resolved, we can count on significant imports of biomethane,” she said.
“Green gas” is an environmentally friendly renewable fuel. Biomethane (biogas enriched to the level of natural gas) is produced from agricultural waste, food industry sewage sludge and the organic fraction of household waste. Biomethane is called a complete analogue of natural gas.
