Georgia’s potato exports fall by nearly 60 thsd tons
Georgia’s potato exports declined sharply in January–September 2026 compared with the same period last year. According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), the country exported 19.4 thsd tons of potatoes worth $5.1 mln during the nine-month period, compared with 79.2 thsd tons worth $26.7 mln a year earlier.
As a result, export volumes fell by 59.8 thsd tons, or approximately 75.5%, while export revenue declined by $21.6 mln, or nearly 81%. The decrease in export value was even more pronounced than the decline in physical shipments, also indicating a reduction in the average export price of Georgian potatoes.
Azerbaijan remained the largest buyer of Georgian potatoes, importing 12.7 thsd tons worth $2.4 mln during the nine-month period. Russia ranked second with purchases of 3.4 thsd tons worth $1.4 mln, followed by Belarus with 2.1 thsd tons worth $942 thsd. Georgian potatoes were also shipped to Armenia, Qatar and Iran. Overall, exports reached six countries.
Meanwhile, Georgia also significantly reduced potato imports. In January–September 2026, the country imported around 4 thsd tons worth $2.8 mln, compared with 9.8 thsd tons worth $4.4 mln during the same period in 2025. Thus, import volumes declined by approximately 59%. Germany, Turkey and the Netherlands remained the main suppliers of potatoes to the Georgian market.
The simultaneous decline in exports and imports indicates significant changes in Georgia’s potato trade flows. However, the published statistical data does not clearly establish the reasons behind these developments. In particular, the decline in exports could be linked to changes in domestic production, demand or market conditions, although additional data would be needed to confirm these factors.
