Flag on Kinburn Spit opens new prospects for Mykolaiv port
The Armed Forces of Ukraine have raised the Ukrainian flag on the Kinburn Spit. This was reported by the Southern Territorial Defence Forces, which said that, following heavy fire strikes, opposing forces were forced to withdraw from their positions and evacuate remaining personnel.
According to military reports, occupying troops are gradually pulling back from their positions, indicating a possible shift in the operational situation along this stretch of coastline. There has been no official confirmation of full de-occupation so far.
The importance of the Kinburn Spit goes beyond military considerations, as it directly affects maritime access to the Mykolaiv port. Ukrainian authorities and agricultural sector representatives have repeatedly said that restoring port operations is impossible without control over this area.
As early as 2022–2023, the Mykolaiv Regional Administration noted that vessels pass very close to the spit, meaning any hostile presence there creates direct risks for maritime logistics.
Agribusiness representatives have also stressed that the Mykolaiv port was nearly ready to join the “grain corridor” arrangement, but the occupation of the Kinburn Spit remained the key limiting factor. The company Nibulon stated that its terminal is technically ready to resume operations quickly once security conditions are ensured.
Logistics operators estimate that reopening the port would reduce grain transport costs for central and northern Ukraine, while before the war the Mykolaiv port handled up to 16 million tonnes annually, making it one of the country’s largest grain hubs.
Further developments will depend on whether Ukraine is able to fully secure control over the Kinburn Spit and ensure stable maritime security in the Black Sea area.
