European tomato prices reach five-year highs
Tomato prices across Europe in August 2026 were above year-ago levels, while in many countries they also exceeded the five-year average. According to the European Commission, the average price reached €1.55/kg.
In the Netherlands, greenhouse vine tomatoes averaged €1.17/kg. Prices increased during a difficult season for growers, marked by extreme weather conditions and various production challenges.
However, higher selling prices did not necessarily translate into stronger farm profitability. Production costs also increased, meaning the financial impact of higher tomato prices varied significantly between growers.
In some countries and market segments, prices remained below average. In Italy, cherry tomatoes and specialty varieties in August were 6% below the five-year average.
In Spain, standard round tomatoes were 1% below the five-year average, while vine tomato prices fell 23% compared with August 2025. This highlights significant differences in price trends across European markets and tomato segments.
