Epizootic situation with ASF continues to worsen in Europe and Asia

The African swine fever (ASF) situation in Europe and Asia continues to worsen. Several countries are reporting new outbreaks in domestic pigs, while the number of cases in wild animals has already exceeded 4,300.

According to the European Commission’s disease monitoring system, nine countries have reported 123 outbreaks of ASF in commercial and homestead farms since the beginning of 2026. In comparison, in all of 2025, the disease was reported in 13 countries among domestic pigs, with 940 outbreaks.

Italy and Slovakia have reported their first cases in domestic pigs in 2026. In Italy, the outbreak was detected in the Piedmont region on a farm where 82 pigs of the local breed were kept. The largest number of outbreaks in 2026 have so far been recorded in Romania, Serbia and Moldova. A significant proportion of cases are in homestead farms.

At the same time, the virus is also actively spreading among wild boars. Since the beginning of the year, more than 4.3 thousand cases of the disease have been recorded in 17 European countries. The largest number of infected animals was found in Poland, Lithuania, Italy, Hungary and Germany.

At the same time, the veterinary service in Poland reported the elimination of ASF among domestic pigs in three provinces after a long period without new cases.

The situation also remains difficult in Asia. Hundreds of outbreaks have been confirmed in Vietnam since the beginning of the year, which led to the destruction of tens of thousands of pigs. New cases have also been registered in Indonesia and Bhutan.

Against this background, individual countries are strengthening response measures. In particular, the Philippines is considering the possibility of wider use of the ASF vaccine and continuing livestock recovery programs.
