Egypt is preparing to build Africa’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility with a capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year. The project is being developed in partnership between French technology company Axens and financial firm Green Sky Capital.

The plant is scheduled to start operations by the end of 2027. It is being implemented on an accelerated timeline and will use lipid-based feedstocks processing technology, including vegetable oils, animal fats, and used cooking oil.

The facility is expected to become a key component of Egypt’s energy transition strategy, enabling greater use of locally sourced feedstocks and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Food industry waste is also expected to play an important role as a raw material source for SAF production.

The project is expected to support decarbonisation of the aviation sector and stimulate the development of the renewable fuels market across the region. Egypt also sees it as a step toward positioning the country as a regional hub for “green” fuels in the Mediterranean and Africa.
