Egypt purchases nearly 2.4 mln tons of wheat from local farmers
Egypt has purchased about 2.37 million tons of wheat from local farmers since the start of the domestic procurement season, according to official data released on May 11. The procurement campaign began less than a month ago, on April 15.
Current procurement volumes are significantly higher than in previous years. They are 17% above the same period in 2025, when Egypt had collected 2.01 million tons, and 6% higher than the 2.22 million tons recorded in 2024.
The Egyptian government continues to buy wheat from farmers at premium prices as part of efforts to reduce reliance on imports while maintaining stable supplies of subsidized bread. More than 69 million people in the country currently benefit from the state bread subsidy program.
Authorities aim to procure a total of 5 million tons of locally produced wheat during the current season, which will run through August 15. The strong pace of deliveries reflects active participation by farmers in the government procurement program.
At the same time, the government is considering reforms to the food subsidy system. Starting in July, Egypt may gradually replace its in-kind subsidy scheme with direct cash transfers, marking one of the most significant changes to the country’s social support system in recent years.
