Egypt may cut wheat imports by 23% on record crop

Egypt’s wheat production could reach a record 10 mln tons in the MY 2026/27. The increase is expected to come from a larger harvested area and higher yields.

The wheat harvested area is forecast to expand to 1.5 mln ha from 1.33 mln ha in the previous season. Production is also being supported by higher government procurement prices, certified seed use, and wider adoption of high-yielding, early-maturing varieties.

With a larger domestic crop and substantial carryover stocks, Egypt’s wheat imports in 2026/27 could fall by 23% to 12 mln tons. This would be the lowest level since the 2022/23 marketing year.

Domestic consumption remains high and is projected at 20.7 mln tons. Demand is supported by population growth and the country’s large migrant and refugee population.

Egypt is also expected to increase wheat flour exports. Shipments could rise by around 17% to 1.4 mln tons in 2026/27, mainly through further expansion into African markets.
