Egypt expands flour exports and strengthens competition in global markets
Egypt is strengthening its position in the global flour market and increasingly competing with major traditional exporters, including Turkey and Kazakhstan. According to IKAR, the country currently exports around 1.5 mln tons of flour annually.
Sudan remains the main destination, accounting for about 1 mln tons of shipments. The remaining volumes are mainly supplied to other African countries, allowing Egypt to expand its presence in markets with strong demand for imported flour.
Egypt’s growing role is also significant for the global wheat market, as the country remains one of the world’s largest wheat importers. Part of the imported grain is processed domestically and then exported as higher value-added products.
For comparison, Turkey exported around 2.4 mln tons of flour in 2025, retaining a leading position in global trade. Kazakhstan, which was the world’s largest flour exporter in 2007–2010, shipped around 1.9 mln tons to foreign markets in 2025.
Further growth in Egyptian flour exports could intensify competition among key suppliers in African and Middle Eastern markets while also supporting Egypt’s demand for imported wheat.
