Crude oil prices fall on talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz

Global crude oil prices fell by more than $2 per barrel on Wednesday amid growing prospects for the reopening of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and Oman are discussing the creation of a temporary navigation corridor and have agreed to clear the route of mines, easing concerns over disruptions to energy supplies from the Middle East.

Brent crude oil futures fell 2.6% to $86.28 per barrel, hitting their lowest level since August 13. US WTI crude oil declined 2.5% to around $80.29 per barrel, its lowest since August 10. Both benchmarks had already fallen by more than 3% on Tuesday.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical route for the global energy market. Before the war between the US, Israel and Iran began, around one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the waterway. Shipping remains constrained, with only five commodity vessels transiting the strait on Tuesday, compared with a 10-day average of 15.

The market is also reacting to signs of a possible easing in geopolitical tensions. Alongside the Iran-Oman talks, Pakistan and Iran reported “significant progress” in discussions on the conflict and possible paths toward peace. At the same time, the US continues to increase sanctions pressure on Tehran, keeping uncertainty high in the crude oil market.

Crude oil prices also came under pressure from rising US inventories. According to the American Petroleum Institute, US crude oil stocks increased by about 4.2 mln barrels in the week ended August 21, compared with analysts’ expectations for an increase of just 0.6 mln barrels. The market is awaiting official EIA data due on August 26.
