China’s demand will be the key factor for the US soybean market

Despite favorable crop prospects, the U.S. soybean market remains heavily dependent on China’s future import decisions. Current conditions appear comfortable, with crop development close to long-term averages, generally supportive weather, and production forecasts pointing to another large soybean harvest in the United States.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, soybean production could reach about 4.4 billion bushels, while ending stocks are projected at around 310 million bushels. This level of inventories is considered sufficient to meet expected demand without requiring significant price increases or demand rationing.

At the same time, analysts stress that China — the world’s largest soybean importer — remains the biggest source of uncertainty. Chinese crushers currently favor supplies from Brazil and Argentina, which remain more competitively priced than U.S. soybeans.

Market experts note that large-scale Chinese purchases could quickly tighten the soybean balance sheet. Beijing has previously indicated a commitment to purchase up to 25 million tonnes of U.S. soybeans, and the implementation of such plans would significantly boost export demand and reduce ending stocks.

According to StoneX analysts, future soybean price trends will depend less on weather and yield prospects and more on trade policy and relations between Washington and Beijing. Any shift in China’s import strategy could rapidly influence the global soybean market balance and market sentiment.
