Champagne production in France to nearly halve due to heat
Champagne production in France could fall by 48% year-on-year in 2026 to 1.34 mln hectoliters. The decline is mainly attributed to extreme heat and drought, which have significantly affected grape yields, as well as a reduction in vineyard area.
France’s total wine production this year is estimated at around 34 mln hectoliters. This is 6% lower than in 2025 and 17% below the five-year average. The country’s grape harvest is expected to be one of the smallest in the past 30 years.
Some wine-producing regions have suffered particularly heavy losses. In Burgundy, Pinot Noir grapes were severely affected by adverse weather conditions, with crop losses exceeding 50%.
The situation is somewhat better in Bordeaux, where wine production could increase by 10% from the very low level recorded in 2025 due to improved yields. However, output is still expected to remain 11% below the 2021–2025 average.
The smaller harvest comes as French wine and spirits exports are declining, negatively affecting the country’s food trade balance. Lower wine supplies in 2026 could add further pressure on France’s wine industry.
