Bulgaria forecasts one of the most difficult seasons for sunseed processors due to low quality of the crop
This year’s sunseed crop in Bulgaria is small, low-oil, with a lot of impurities and low moisture content, said Petar Dimitrov, an analyst and founder of AgroPortal.bg, in an interview.
“I have very serious fears that the processing industry is going to have the most difficult year. And the blow to oil mills is very strong, because, apart from a small amount of product, the oil content is at least 3 points lower than in previous years, which means even less oil production,” he said.
According to Dimitrov, alternatives for imports have been sought for a long time, but they are limited, as the problem with sunseed is relevant for all the Balkans.
He added that the situation with the quality of corn in the country this year is also difficult, as the grain contains a lot of aflatoxins and ochratoxins.
