Brazil to begin tests for increasing biodiesel blend to B20

Brazil is set to begin tests in May to evaluate the feasibility of increasing the biodiesel content in diesel fuel to 20% (B20). The trials will be carried out by researchers at the Maua Institute of Technology, according to Renato Romio, head of the institute’s vehicle division.

Brazil currently mandates a 15% biodiesel blend in diesel fuel and a 30% ethanol blend in gasoline. The country is one of the world’s leading biofuel producers, relying mainly on soybean oil and sugarcane as feedstocks. Discussions about raising blending mandates have intensified amid instability in global energy markets.

According to Romio, the first phase of testing will focus on B15 and B20 fuel blends. Engines will run for 300 hours to assess filter clogging, fuel injection system performance, and injector nozzle conditions. Researchers will also analyze pollutant emissions from different biodiesel blends.

The initiative comes as concerns grow over dependence on fossil fuels and imported energy supplies following disruptions in global energy markets. Brazilian industry officials believe a higher biodiesel blend could reduce reliance on conventional fuels while supporting the country’s agricultural sector.

The Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries said the tests could pave the way for adopting biodiesel blends above B15 in the future. Industry representatives described the prospect of moving toward B20 as highly promising for soybean producers and the broader biofuels sector.
