Australia is set to break the record for beef production in 2026 – over 3 mln tons
Australia’s beef production is expected to exceed 3 mln tons in carcase weight for the first time in 2026, setting a new annual record, according to Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). Higher slaughter numbers, favourable seasonal conditions and strong feedlot throughput are supporting output.
The national cattle herd is estimated at 30.8 mln head. Slaughter is forecast to reach 9.6 mln head in 2026, up 300 thsd head from a year earlier.
Grain-fed beef is playing an important role in production growth. More than 4 mln head of cattle passed through feedlots in the year to June 30, while average carcase weights are expected to reach 313 kg in 2026.
Australian beef exports are forecast to reach 2.4 mln tons in 2026, supported by strong global demand amid tight supplies in several other major producing countries.
Slaughter is expected to decline gradually in 2027–2028, but beef production should remain above 2025 levels due to rising average carcase weights and continued growth in grain-fed beef output.
