Argentina’s river grain transport hits five-year high
Argentina’s domestic river grain shipments increased to 805.8 thsd tons in 2025, reaching their highest level in five years. Volumes rose 18% compared with 2024, according to the Rosario Board of Trade (BCR).
Most grain is transported by barge along the Paraná Waterway to the Greater Rosario agro-export complex. River logistics are important for the competitiveness of Argentine grain, as barge transportation is cheaper than road or rail freight.
River grain shipments increased for the second consecutive year. The 2025 volume was 27% above the average of the previous five years. Transportation of other cargoes along the waterway, including fuels and fertilizers, also increased.
Entre Ríos province accounted for 718.3 thsd tons, or 89% of total domestic river grain shipments, up 20% year-on-year. Volumes in Santa Fe more than doubled, rising from 43.7 thsd tons to 87.5 thsd tons.
Among individual terminals, Cargill’s Diamante facility handled the largest volume at 305.8 thsd tons, up 8.5% from 2024. Meanwhile, the La Paz Agricultural Cooperative increased its shipments by 63% to 279.8 thsd tons.
