All European Union countries have agreed to open the first cluster of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.

This is according to an official EU statement.

This is the start of negotiations on a key block covering the foundations of the accession process, in particular the area of justice, freedom and fundamental rights.

“Today we are launching negotiations on the foundations of the accession process, in particular justice, freedom and fundamental human rights. We have seen the hard work of these countries and are rewarding it with a clear path forward,” the EU press service said.

The statement emphasizes that the enlargement of the European Union is “a strategic choice and an investment in a shared future of peace, security and prosperity.”

  • Earlier, the European Union announced that it would officially launch negotiations on Ukraine’s accession on June 15.
  • The European Union ambassadors have urgently submitted to the Permanent Representatives Committee a discussion on the process of preparing for the official opening of the “Fundamentals” cluster in the EU accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova.
  • Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said that Budapest and Kyiv had reached an agreement on expanding the linguistic, educational, cultural and political rights of the 100,000-strong Hungarian minority. According to him, the Ukrainian government has undertaken to transfer the measures developed into a legal framework in the near future.
  • The commitments undertaken by Ukraine will also be reflected in its action plan to the EU. If this happens, the Hungarian government will contribute to the opening of the first EU accession cluster for Ukraine.
