Algeria purchased over 1 mln tons of wheat in a tender, mainly from the Black Sea region
Algeria’s state grain agency OAIC has purchased around 1 million tonnes of food wheat in an international tender that closed on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, European traders said. The volume of purchases is estimated to have been between 1.05 million and 1.08 million tonnes, although the exact amount in Algerian tenders is difficult to determine.
Wheat prices ranged from $253 to $257 per tonne cost and freight (CNF), equivalent to around $230 per tonne FOB for wheat with a protein content of 12.5%. Most lots were purchased at $257 per tonne CNF, although some lots were likely purchased at lower prices.
The main source of wheat was the Black Sea region, including Ukraine, Russia and Bulgaria, although some may have come from the Baltic region. The origin of the wheat was not mandatory, but traders assume that Black Sea suppliers will prevail.
The wheat is ordered for delivery in three periods: from September 16 to 30, from October 1 to 15 and from October 16 to 31. For suppliers from South America or Australia, shipments will be made a month earlier. The OAIC has probably decided to skip purchases for the first half of September.
Algeria remains a key importer of wheat from the European Union, in particular from France, but suppliers from the Black Sea region are actively increasing their presence in the Algerian market. In the previous tender on June 17, the OAIC purchased 550-570 thousand tons of wheat at a price of $ 244.50-245 per ton CNF.
Further development of the grain and oilseed markets of Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be in the spotlight of the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference, taking place on April 22–23 in Kyiv. The event will focus on strategic directions for the agricultural sector through 2030, including investments, energy independence, processing, and exports of high-value products.
