Irrigation systems in Ukraine. Current status and prospects

Climate change poses additional threats to the country’s food security due to the growing annual water deficit across a significant part of the territory, the deterioration of the engineering infrastructure of irrigation systems, and the stagnation of irrigation potential.

The use of irrigation systems is currently extremely unsatisfactory, as only about 130,000 hectares of the 2.2 million hectares of irrigated land are actually being irrigated.

It is the development of the irrigation sector that is seen as an objective prerequisite for ensuring an annual production level of grain and oilseeds in the amount of 80-100 million tonnes, which will enable Ukraine to remain one of the world’s food donors.

Thanks to the restoration of irrigated agriculture potential, Ukraine can take a stable position as a supplier of agricultural products to neighbouring European countries, where the production potential of certain crops has declined.

Ukraine needs investment inflows to restore and develop irrigation systems and has the prerequisites to return these investments with significant profits.

UkrAgroConsult’s research allows potential investors and market players to assess the current state of irrigated agriculture and identify areas for potentially profitable investments.
