Zambia’s corn harvest could reach 5 mln tons in 2026
Zambia is expecting one of its largest corn harvests in recent years. According to preliminary estimates, corn production in 2026 could approach 5 million tonnes, significantly exceeding last year’s output of 3.9 million tonnes. Such a result would strengthen the country’s food security and enhance its position in regional agricultural markets.
The increase in production is attributed to favorable weather conditions throughout the growing season, timely supplies of seeds and fertilizers to farmers, and continued government support for the agricultural sector. Authorities have praised local producers for effectively utilizing available resources and technologies.
The Zambian government views the current outlook as a step toward achieving its long-term agricultural development strategy. The country aims to increase corn production to 10 million tonnes by 2031, supporting economic growth and strengthening food self-sufficiency.
Positive prospects are also emerging for other crops. According to the latest forecasts, Zambia is expected to increase rice and wheat production. Experts note that crop diversification helps reduce risks associated with climate variability and volatility in global food markets.
At the same time, analysts warn of potential climate challenges in the 2026/27 season. Rainfall levels may fall below long-term averages, posing risks to future crop yields. As a result, experts recommend expanding the use of drought-tolerant varieties, improving water management systems, and adopting climate-smart agricultural practices.
