Will Ukrainian barley prices resume their rise?
Article author:
In August Black Sea barley prices returned to the levels seen in January-early February 2021, supported by:
– market worries about the quality issues in France, where price rise together with harvesting and export delays took place
– lower than expected barley yields in Russia, accompanied by slow exports of the new crop compared to last year
– sharp downward revision of 2021/22 barley export potential from Canadian AAFC
– milling wheat market and active international tender buying
For August average prices for Black Sea barley were unusually high and above the 5-year average.
Last time Ukrainian origin reached that level in August 2012, when the dry weather pattern considerably decreased export potential, UkrAgroConsult reports.
For the current season USDA sees Ukrainian exports at 5.8 MMT. In 2021/22 MY Ukraine will be the third on the list of top barley exporters.
