Why is a kilogram of roast beef more expensive in Argentina than in Europe?

Devaluation and uncertainty are hitting the meat sector, while demand for chicken and pork substitutes is growing.
Argentines are feeling the impact of the economic crisis. Beef consumption is struggling, and families are looking for cheaper alternatives. Leonardo Rafael, president of the Chamber of Butchers, warned that the situation is characterized by “extreme uncertainty,” which is already reflected in falling sales.
One of the most striking aspects is the price difference compared to the rest of the world. In an interview with Radio Rivadavia, Rafael gave a striking example: “A kilogram of good roast beef here costs between 12,000 and 15,000 pesos. How is it that in the land of cows we pay more than in Paris?”
Currency at the Core of the Problem
The leader explained that the issue isn’t just about production costs, but also a structural one: “We have high domestic costs, and this is due to the weakness of our currency.” He argued that devaluation and the lack of a clear policy in the sector are creating a situation in which Argentine meat is becoming unaffordable even for producers themselves.
Changes in Consumption
While there has been some interest in purchasing half-carcasses as a way to reduce costs in recent months, Rafael emphasized that this is not a widespread trend, but rather an isolated strategy of a few businesses.
The decline in purchasing power has led many households to reduce their beef purchases and choose other, more affordable protein sources: “Your budget is crucial. Many have switched to chicken or pork. They are not as effective, but they are more economical options and play an important role in family nutrition,” he noted.
Lack of Direction in Meat Policy
In addition to the country’s vast cattle population, Rafael lamented the lack of official guidelines for the sector. “It’s not that beef itself is expensive, but the lack of a meat policy. That’s why we consume less beef,” he concluded.
