What are the risks of having a single big buyer for Russian rapeseed oil sector?
Article author:
The Russian rapeseed market in the 2026/27 season is undergoing rapid expansion and structural transformation, driven by state support, investments in processing capacity, and a shift from less profitable crops. The sector is strongly oriented toward China, which has effectively become the backbone of its export model. The expansion of winter rapeseed further enhances production potential and efficiency.
However, this concentration on a single export destination creates a major structural risk. In 2026, this vulnerability became evident as China tightened import controls, particularly regarding GMO compliance, and introduced delays and restrictions that disrupted trade flows. At the same time, Russia continues to expand its crushing capacity aimed primarily at the Chinese market, further increasing dependency.
As a result, while Chinese demand remains a key supportive factor, risks related to market access and execution are rising. In the new season, the critical factor will be not production volumes, but the stability of export channels.
