US winter wheat crop conditions continue to deteriorate
Last week, winter wheat crop conditions in the US deteriorated again, according to Zerno On-line, citing the US Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
The share of winter wheat crops in excellent and good condition fell from 28% to 27%, the lowest since 1989. A week earlier, 28% of the crops were in excellent and good condition, compared to 52% a year ago.
Spring planting is proceeding at an above-average pace. By May 17, US farmers had planted 67% of their planned soybean acreage (63% on the same date last year and 53% on average over the past five years). Corn has been planted at 76% of the planned acreage (76% and 70%, respectively), and spring wheat at 73% (80% and 66%).
According to the USDA, wheat production this year will fall to its lowest level since 1972 – 42.3 million tons (54.0 million tons last year). Gross corn production will reach 406.3 (432.3) million tons, and soybean production will reach 120.7 (116.0) million tons.
