US senators reach deal to end shutdown
US senators have reached a bipartisan agreement that will allow them to end the longest government shutdown in history.
The longest government shutdown in history lasted 40 days. The US government was partially shut down for more than a month because Congress could not agree on funding for government services. The previous record of 35 days was set during Donald Trump’s first term as president and ended in January 2019.
“It looks like we are getting close to ending the shutdown. You will find out very soon,” US President Donald Trump told reporters. The senators’ agreement is the first step towards ending the “shutdown”.
After passing the Senate, the bill must be approved by the House of Representatives, also controlled by Republicans, and then signed by Trump – a process that could take several days.
