US invests over $14 billion in dairy processing amid export growth
The US dairy industry is increasing investment in processing capacity as it expands its presence in global markets. The value of active investment projects in the sector exceeds $14 billion. The funds are being directed toward the construction of new facilities, modernization of existing plants, and increased production of value-added dairy products, including cheese, milk powder, and whey ingredients.
According to US industry organizations, dairy exports reached approximately $9.5 billion in 2025, up 15% from the previous year. This was the second-highest result in the industry’s history. Export volumes totaled around 2.8 mln tons, exceeding the 2024 level by 5%.
The main drivers of export growth were shipments of cheese, butter and milk fats, as well as whey-based products. US producers are actively expanding sales in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Growing demand for dairy proteins and food industry ingredients is creating additional opportunities for processors.
Investment programs include the construction of automated cheese plants, installation of whey fractionation equipment, and development of aseptic filling lines for shelf-stable dairy products. These projects will allow companies to increase milk processing volumes, diversify their product portfolios, and improve production efficiency.
The expansion of US dairy processing capacity could intensify competition in the global dairy market, particularly in the cheese, dried dairy ingredients, and whey protein segments. However, the impact of new capacity on export prices will depend on the pace of project commissioning, raw material costs, and global demand.
