Uruguay may start exporting meat to the EU next week
Vice Chancellor Valeria Chukasi expects a gradual opening of the European market, while negotiations on regional quotas are ongoing.
Deputy Foreign Minister Valeria Chukasi suggested that the Uruguayan meat market could begin to open to the European Union next week as part of a free trade agreement with Mercosur.
Chukasi said negotiations are ongoing, with the focus on agreeing on export quotas at the regional level and monitoring the situation on the international market, which is characterized by attractive prices and growing demand from the United States, currently the main export destination for Uruguayan beef.
The official also mentioned restrictions imposed by China on meat imports from Brazil until September, a factor affecting global trade. “Today, the markets appear to be open for Uruguay.” “I believe that of the four Mercosur partners, it is in the best position,” she said.
The President of the Chamber of Refrigeration Industries, Eduardo Urgal, emphasized the need for internal agreements within the bloc to effectively access EU quotas.
