Ukraine’s EU accession raises concerns among Polish farmers, Nawrocki pledges protection
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has said that Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union poses a risk to Poland’s agricultural sector. He stated that he intends to consistently defend the interests of domestic farmers in the context of upcoming EU decisions.
In a statement released by the Presidential Chancellery, Nawrocki stressed that Poland must protect its agricultural sector from excessive external pressure. He called for “fair treatment” of Polish agriculture, particularly within the framework of the EU’s Green Deal and broader European trade policies.
The Polish president also criticised the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur countries, saying its consequences are already creating difficulties for local producers. According to him, Poland is forced to respond to EU-level decisions that affect farmers’ competitiveness.
Nawrocki added that Polish authorities should actively defend agriculture both from external competition and from policy decisions made in Brussels that, in his view, may be unfavourable for domestic production.
At the same time, he emphasised that Poland has strong agricultural potential and highly skilled farmers who must be protected from excessive regulatory and trade pressures. He said the future of agriculture should remain a strategic national priority.
