Ukraine updates organic production rules in line with EU standards
Ukraine’s Parliament has adopted a new law on state regulation of organic production, circulation and labeling of organic products (No. 13204-1), bringing the country’s regulatory framework closer to European Union standards. The legislation was approved on June 30 and aims to improve transparency and consumer confidence in the organic market.
According to the Parliament’s press service, the law establishes clear and harmonized requirements for the production, cultivation and labeling of organic products. Its primary objective is to ensure that products labeled as “organic” fully comply with the established standards and provide consumers with reliable information.
The new legislation introduces transparent rules for organic production and trade aligned with current EU legislation. It also strengthens the state control system, which is expected to improve oversight, reduce fraudulent practices and prevent the misuse of organic labeling.
Lawmakers also expect the reform to support the development of Ukraine’s agricultural sector and rural areas by encouraging production diversification, increasing value-added processing and creating new jobs in organic production, processing and logistics. The law further promotes sustainable agriculture in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal, including climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation and environmental protection.
The Parliament emphasized that implementing the new law will help expand the presence of Ukrainian organic products in international premium markets and attract investment into the country’s organic sector. Officials believe the reform will strengthen Ukraine’s competitiveness in the EU and global markets while reinforcing its position as a reliable agricultural trading partner.
