Ukraine holds significant potential to supply non-GM soy to the EU market

Ukraine is well-positioned to play a key role in supplying the European Union with non-GM soy, thanks to its large production volumes, high self-sufficiency, and readiness to comply with new sustainability requirements. This was highlighted by Susanna Fromwald, Secretary General of the Danube Soy Association, during the Non-GM Soy Conference 2025 in Frankfurt, in a comment to AgroPortal.ua.

According to Fromwald, Ukraine’s potential complements the EU’s capabilities. While the EU produces around 3 million tons of soy, Ukraine’s output reaches approximately 6 million tons, with a self-sufficiency level of about 400%, making it a major exporter. In comparison, the EU’s self-sufficiency stands at just 8%. Europe remains heavily reliant on imports of protein crops, and Ukraine is among the most promising suppliers due to its proximity, product availability, and growing sustainable production.

Fromwald noted that the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) could significantly affect the soy market in both the EU and Ukraine, though the European Commission has not yet finalized implementation mechanisms. “The situation is very uncertain: we will learn the details only at the end of the year — whether requirements remain in force, or if changes or delays will occur,” she said.

Ukraine’s Protein Partnership Program, which includes around 50 partners and covers 25% of domestic non-GM soy production, helps local producers adapt to EU production standards. As a result, Ukrainian producers already meet or even exceed EU requirements, particularly in verifying the absence of deforestation and land-use changes. Fromwald emphasized that EU-standard non-GM soy production in Ukraine ensures fair competition for European farmers and strengthens the foundations for Ukraine’s deeper integration into the EU.
