Ukraine and Russia could start losing traditional grain markets amid Black Sea export disruptions

фрахт

Prolonged shipping disruptions in the Black Sea could cause Ukraine and Russia to lose part of their traditional grain markets in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Importers unable to rely on stable Black Sea supplies are being forced to seek alternative origins, creating additional opportunities for Australia, Argentina, the US, Canada and EU countries.

The coming months could be particularly critical, as a significant share of Black Sea grain is traditionally exported between August and December. Toward the end of the year, new crops from Australia and Argentina enter the global market, meaning prolonged disruptions to Black Sea supplies could allow competitors to strengthen their positions in markets traditionally supplied by Ukraine and Russia. Winning these buyers back once shipping resumes could prove difficult.

Even if port operations normalize in the autumn, accumulated volumes cannot be exported quickly. Limited export infrastructure capacity would create competition between old-crop stocks and the new harvest. Domestically, this could lead to rising inventories, higher storage costs and pressure on purchase prices, particularly for smaller farms without sufficient storage capacity of their own.

At the same time, lower Black Sea supplies could support global wheat prices and increase costs for major importers in North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. If shipping disruptions persist for several more months, the result could be not merely a temporary decline in exports but a longer-term redistribution of global grain trade in favor of competing suppliers.
