Ukraine and Romania expand rail and river routes for fuel supplies

Ukraine and Romania have agreed to expand the logistics capacity of rail and river routes used for fuel supplies. Ukraine is paying particular attention to the Romanian corridor as part of efforts to diversify petroleum product imports, First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal said.

The agreements followed a recent meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Romanian President Nicusor Dan. The two governments are now working on their implementation and on increasing the capacity of the relevant logistics infrastructure.

According to Shmyhal, Ukraine’s fuel market remains stable and balanced, with available resources sufficient to meet current consumer demand. At the same time, the government continues to diversify supply routes due to wartime risks and reduce dependence on individual logistics corridors.

Ukraine has also launched a pilot project for underground fuel storage. The initiative envisages creating a distributed network of underground petroleum product storage facilities to make the country’s fuel infrastructure more resilient to wartime threats.

Ensuring uninterrupted diesel supplies for the defense sector and critical infrastructure remains a priority. Expanding routes through Romania, together with additional storage capacity, is expected to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s fuel market and improve the security of petroleum product supplies.
