Ukraine: 2021 pea crop outlook improved in June
Article author:
As expected, June brought warm, wet weather to the south of Ukraine, right where peas are grown, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Farmers in Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kirovohrad, Luhansk, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions have planted more than projected. As of June 24, the total pea sown area was 245.4 Th ha.
Pea plants in most regions are at the stage of pod formation, but pea ripening is already underway in the southernmost areas. So, the start of full-scale harvesting is around the corner.
UkrAgroConsult has left its acreage estimate unchanged, but we are increasing our yield estimate from 2.31 MT/ha to 2.44 MT/ha because of favorable weather currently seen in pea growing regions.
In MY 2021/22, Ukrainian peas, as usual, will face competition in the world market from their Russian counterpart. Unlike grains, pea exports from Russia are not charged with any duty, therefore Russian exporters will be able to offer their product at the most attractive price.
