British dairy producers are stepping up efforts to enter markets in Asia and Mexico as they seek to diversify export destinations and reduce dependence on the domestic market. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) is supporting the development of new trade opportunities. The strategy focuses primarily on value-added products, including traditional cheeses, butter, cream, yogurt and premium ice cream.

An important step has been the expansion of trade opportunities under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). In October 2026, the UK shipped its first commercial consignment of cheese to Mexico under the agreement’s provisions. Preferential market access could improve the competitiveness of British dairy products, although specific benefits depend on tariffs, rules of origin and import requirements in the destination country.

Meanwhile, AHDB is working to attract buyers from Asian countries. Representatives of international companies are visiting British dairy processing facilities to learn about traditional cheese production and other dairy products. Importers are particularly interested in raw material traceability, animal welfare standards and products with protected geographical indications. Promising export products include cheddar and Red Leicester cheeses, as well as high-fat cream products.

Export expansion is particularly important for British dairy processors facing rising energy, packaging and temperature-controlled transportation costs. Entering new markets could provide companies with additional sales channels through retail chains and food service operators.

At the same time, AHDB emphasizes that trade preferences alone do not guarantee export growth. British producers must comply with veterinary and other regulatory requirements in importing countries, maintain refrigerated logistics and establish relationships with local distributors. The outlook for dairy exports to Asia and Mexico will depend on companies’ ability to turn interest from overseas buyers into stable commercial shipments.
