U.S. farmers expect to plant less corn and more soybeans in 2024
Surveyed producers across the United States intend to plant 90.0 million acres to corn in 2024, down 5 percent from last year. In 38 of the 48 states evaluated, corn acreage planted decreased or remained unchanged. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota, and Texas are expected to see acreage declines of 300,000 acres or more from last year. If that happens, corn acreage in Arizona and Oregon will be the largest ever recorded.
Soybean producers intend to plant 86.5 million acres in 2024, up 3 percent from last year. Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Kentucky are expected to increase planted acreage by 100,000 or more acres from last year. Record high planted acreage is expected in Kentucky and New York.
Total wheat acreage for 2024 is estimated at 47.5 million acres, down 4% from 2023 in comparable states. Winter wheat acreage at 34.1 million acres is 1% less than the previous estimate and 7% less than last year in comparable states. Spring wheat acreage in 2024 is expected to be 11.3 million acres, up 1 percent from 2023. Durum wheat acreage is expected to be 2.03 million acres by 2024, a 22% increase over last year in the comparable states.
