Trump’s duties opened the US market to Russian fertilizers
According to Russian media, the introduction of U.S. import tariffs on goods from most countries worldwide — including nitrogen fertilizers — while no such restrictions were imposed on Russia, led to the rapid entrenchment of Russian suppliers in the U.S. market.
As a result, Russian producers significantly increased exports to the United States and captured around 35% of U.S. nitrogen fertilizer imports. Russia effectively became a key beneficiary of U.S. tariff policy, taking advantage of barriers imposed on other exporting countries.
At the same time, market assessments suggest that any easing or revision of protective tariffs by the White House could restore competition. In that case, the position of Russian fertilizers in the U.S. market may come under pressure from alternative suppliers, particularly Algeria and Nigeria.
