Thailand tightens controls on corn imports through border areas
Feed corn imports restricted in 57 districts to protect local farmers.
Thailand’s Department of Domestic Trade has imposed stricter controls on corn imports through border areas, especially in the northeastern city of Bueng Kan, which borders Laos. The measure is aimed at protecting local farmers by including feed corn on a list of controlled items.
It is now prohibited to move more than 10 tonnes of feed corn in and out of controlled areas in 57 districts in 17 provinces without prior permission from the relevant authorities.
Four more districts were added to the list in July: Jana (Songkhla Province), Ko Sri Chang (Chonburi Province), Muang in Bueng Kan, and Muang in Nong Khai.
Violations are punishable by fines of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to US$3,077, or both.
