Syria’s wheat fields turn green again as farmers hope for recovery

In the northeastern province of Hasakah, water has begun flowing again through parts of the Khabur River for the first time in years, helping revive agricultural land long affected by drought, war, and neglect. After years of decline, farmers are now seeing green wheat fields stretching toward the horizon, signaling a fragile but important recovery.

This year’s heavy rainfall has been among the strongest in decades, enabling Syria to sow around 92% of its planned wheat area nationwide. Authorities say Hasakah alone accounts for roughly 35% of the country’s total cultivation plan, underscoring the region’s strategic role in Syria’s food production.

Despite the positive agricultural season, farmers and officials warn of major challenges. Rising costs of fertilizers, seeds, and fuel continue to push production expenses higher, while government procurement prices often fail to match global market levels. As a result, many farmers are forced to reduce cultivated areas or operate at a loss.

The sector also continues to suffer from the long-term consequences of war, with many farmers displaced from their land and damaged infrastructure still hindering their return. In addition, officials caution that prolonged regional instability could further increase production costs and strain agricultural recovery efforts.

Despite these difficulties, farmers remain cautiously optimistic. They hope improved weather conditions and gradual recovery efforts will not only lead to better harvests but also encourage younger generations to return to rural areas, restoring life and activity to Syria’s agricultural heartlands.
