Sugar beet acreage will decrease by 7% in the EU
According to Reuters, sugar beet plantings in Europe are expected to decline in the MY 2026/2027, according to industry executives speaking at the Dubai Sugar Conference on Thursday.
Marion Hoff, European sales director for Tereos, one of the world’s largest sugar producers, said that next season, sugar beet plantings in the European Union are likely to fall by 6-7%.
Confirming this forecast, a representative of Czarnikow, a company that provides services in the field of raw material supply chain management, said that sugar beet plantings in the EU could fall by 5%.
Stephen Geldart, head of analytical department at Czarnikow, said that the reduction in plantings is expected to have a negative impact on sugar production volumes. He predicts that in the MY 2026/2027, total EU sugar production will decrease to around 15.5 million tonnes, compared to the estimated 17.1 million tonnes in the MY 2025/2026 season.
