Spanish producers call for a halt to Brazilian beef imports
Spain’s agricultural organisation Asaja, representing beef producers, has called on Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and the European Union institutions to immediately suspend beef imports from Brazil. The demand follows reports of the possible use of substances banned under EU legislation in beef production.
The organisation stressed that when violations affecting food safety, product traceability and consumer confidence are identified, regulators should respond immediately. Asaja argues that the EU should not delay action while waiting for additional reviews or investigations.
According to the organisation, European livestock producers must comply with much stricter rules on animal health, animal welfare, traceability and environmental standards, while imported meat from third countries does not always meet equivalent requirements. Asaja says the EU should ensure the same standards apply to all suppliers.
The organisation also stressed that the issue goes beyond unfair competition. It concerns food safety and consumer confidence. If certain veterinary substances or production practices are prohibited within the European Union, products produced using those methods outside the EU should not be allowed onto the European market.
In addition, Spanish producers criticised the EU’s trade policy, arguing that it continues to tighten regulations for European farmers while supporting meat imports from countries such as Brazil and Argentina. Asaja said it is not opposed to international trade but is calling for effective border controls, reciprocal trade conditions and equal standards for both domestic and imported products.
