Pakistan to import 750 thsd tons of wheat to support domestic market

Pakistan plans to import 750 thsd tons of wheat to boost domestic supplies and meet regional demand. The state-owned Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has issued an international tender for wheat procurement on a CFR basis for delivery to Karachi and/or Gwadar ports.

The tender is open to latest-crop wheat from any origin that meets the required quality standards. The minimum bid quantity is 50 thsd tons, with a 10% margin at the supplier’s option.

The imported wheat is expected to be distributed among three provinces according to their requirements. Sindh is set to receive 300 thsd tons, Punjab 250 thsd tons and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 200 thsd tons. The purchase of 750 thsd tons was approved by a government committee.

The new tender follows an earlier government decision to allow imports of 1 mln tons of wheat after provinces requested additional supplies. The purchases are aimed at covering the gap between domestic production and consumption while maintaining sufficient wheat stocks.

Pakistan’s wheat consumption in the 2026/27 season is estimated at around 31.3 mln tons, while production is forecast at 29.6 mln tons. This leaves a gap of about 1.7 mln tons between domestic production and demand, which will need to be covered by existing stocks and imports.
