Spain becomes increasingly dependent on potato imports as domestic production declines

Spain’s potato production fell by approximately 8% in 2026 to 1.8 mln tons, compared with 1.95 mln tons a year earlier. The main reason for the decline was prolonged drought, which negatively affected yields in several regions of the country. In Andalusia, where early potatoes are predominantly grown, some producers harvested 35% less than in 2025.

Despite some recovery in planted area in recent years, potato production in Spain remains significantly below the levels recorded in previous decades. While more than 270 thsd ha were planted with potatoes in 1990, the area stood at just 66.66 thsd ha in 2025. According to industry association Fepex, potato production reached 1.97 mln tons in 2024, declined to 1.95 mln tons in 2025 and fell further to 1.8 mln tons in 2026.

Meanwhile, domestic demand for potatoes continues to grow, particularly due to the expansion of the hospitality and food service sector, which serves millions of tourists. As domestic production is insufficient to meet the country’s needs, Spain relies on substantial volumes of imported potatoes. Imports totaled 1.27 mln tons in 2025, while 783 thsd tons were imported during January–July 2026.

France remains the largest supplier of potatoes to the Spanish market, exporting 941 thsd tons in 2025 and accounting for approximately 74% of total imports. The Netherlands ranked second with 82.7 thsd tons, while Egypt supplied 39 thsd tons. French producers benefit from significant logistical advantages due to their geographical proximity to Spain, making it more difficult for other exporters to expand their market presence.

Further expansion of domestic potato production in Spain is constrained not only by weather-related risks but also by restrictions on the use of crop protection products. Spanish industry organization Asonal has highlighted the gradual reduction in the number of authorized products for pest and disease control, creating additional challenges for farmers. Against this backdrop, Spain’s dependence on imported potatoes remains high, while competition among foreign suppliers is becoming increasingly important for meeting domestic market demand.
